I live in central Connecticut with my husband Dave and our three kids, Aimée, Benjamin, and Christopher. Dave is a computer programmer and trainer who sometimes works at home in his basement office. Aimée is 15 and loves to read, play the piano, and sew for her American Girl dolls. (Visit Aimée's web page to see pictures of her dolls and their handmade clothes.) Benjamin is 11; he likes to play games on the computer, build with Legos, and practice karate. Christopher is 7 and mostly likes playing with Ben. I was a stand-out student in school, graduating at the top of my high school class and attending a top-notch liberal arts college, but I had a vague sense all along that what I was good at was school--test taking, paper writing, teacher pleasing--rather than anything really useful outside of academia. I toyed with graduate school but couldn't justify the time and expense. I worked briefly for an educational testing company, which further eroded my confidence in traditional methods of education, and when I first stumbled upon John Holt's writings on education and homeschooling, I was easily persuaded. I've always enjoyed learning, especially by reading. I've been a Christian since I was a teen, and that has helped form me into who I am more than anything else. I also enjoy writing, exercising with videos, and messing around on the computer. I am a frequent contributor to a variety of homeschooling message boards and email lists, where I use the handle Laura in CT. Honeypot Hollow is the name we gave to our homeschool when we moved to our present house, which is nestled in a hollow near the Honeypot Brook.
